Department/Branch Profile:

The Department of Pathology provides diagnostic laboratory, point of care, and transfusion services for Sidra Medicine, for affiliated hospitals in Doha, and for referred-in specimens from outside of Qatar. In addition to its clinical service duties, the Department participates in basic and clinical research related to human disease, and provides teaching to medical undergraduates, residents and fellows in partnership with WCMC-Q. The Division of Hematopathology within the Department of Pathology specializes in providing diagnostic hematopathology and transfusion services under the umbrella of Pathology.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Department Chair the Division Chief provides clinical, education, research and executive management leadership within the division of Hematopathology. The Division Chief is a clinical and managerial leader working with the Sidra executive team to develop and deliver strategy and business plans and is accountable for resources and performance in the division of Hematopathology . He/she integrates research and education priorities into a program of excellent clinical service delivery.  Specialized outpatient clinical services including but not limited to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for complex and complicated cases/ consultations and case management, and other associated clinical and academic activities are managed within the Division.  It is anticipated that the Division Chief will be able to continue with personal clinical educational and research activities albeit in a reduced and modified manner, and will have a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar.

Key role accountabilities:
  • Identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division and develops implementation strategies to achieve them.
  • Recommends clinical privileges, appointment, reappointment and corrective action for each member of the Division of Hematopathology as well as promoting mentorship and academic career development for these staff members.
  • Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the division.
  • Accountable for the Division performance, Customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance of the Division of Hematopathology.
  • Leads clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for the Outpatient activities of Hematopathology services.
  • Promotes leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention, and direct mission of excellence for the medical staff, and collaborates with the Department Chairs and other Division Chiefs to execute the strategies.
  • Responsible for all administrative related activities of the Hematopathology Division unless otherwise provided by the hospital, and serves on all requested committees, including medical executive committee, and appointing such committees as necessary to conduct the operations of the department.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide & support the provision of services to the Hematopathology services.
  • Continues surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Hematopathology Division who have delineated clinical privileges, including performance, and ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations (OPPE and FPPE).
  • Ensures that the staff of the Hematopathology Division provide services that are in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the Joint Commission International, Qatar Supreme Council of Health, and all other applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Implements the clinical service strategies and business plan for the Hematopathology Division.
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participates in the evaluation of products for use by different members of the Hematopathology Division to ensure their safety and efficacy.
  • Sets and achieves targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided and initiates actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives.
  • Works with the Department Chair to establish and update the work week standards for all physicians on staff and assures that there is appropriate clinical coverage for all patients requiring medical care from the Hematopathology Division.
  • Ensures all members of the Hematopathology Division optimize the use of electronic medical records.
  • Sets and achieves targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws of the State of Qatar.
  • In conjunction with the Department Chair, ensures the implementation of robust clinical governance structures and processes to ensure patient safety.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Research officer and other Division heads of research, ensures a program of clinical and translational research is developed, promoted and delivered within the Hematopathology Division.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar, ensures there is an active and continuous program of undergraduate teaching within the Hematopathology specialty to ensure an effective learning environment for students, residents, and medical staff.
  • Is actively involved in research, graduate teaching, and publication in higher impact refereed journals, advising of students and participation in academic services.
  • Ensures effective communication and involvement of all staff within the Hematopathology Division in regards to key decisions and initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with other Department Chairs, Chief Officers, and Executive Directors to achieve broad Sidra objectives.
  • Conducts other duties as may be directed by the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer.
  • Initiates, implements and oversees programs designed to foster positive relations between Hematopathology physicians and the hospital operations and administration.
  • Assists with marketing strategies to inform physicians and their staff of Sidra’s clinical diagnostic procedures, services and resources.
  • Promotes and evaluates physician community outreach programs as appropriate.
  • Develops, manages and supports physician and community relationships, coordinating and disseminating information to all stakeholders to solicit ongoing support from the State of Qatar for Hematopathology.
  • Identifies and coordinates resolution of problems to improve physician utilization and patient satisfaction.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate systems of communication between Sidra and other providers of primary and advanced patient care in Qatar for the purpose of individual patient care and systemic safety and quality improvement.
  • Supports the development of Sidra as a world class regional center.
  • Scope of clinical responsibilities for Division Chief - Hematopathology includes but not limited to:
    • Manages and monitors, specialized investigation and diagnosis of pediatric and/or maternal disease in the fields of hematopathology, immunopathology, or transfusion medicine; and related services.
    • Identification of specialized testing appropriate for specific scenarios, and triaging and/or coordination of these cases where more than one pathology division is involved
    • Consultation and advice regarding the appropriate management of patients and samples requiring hematopathology, immunopathology, or transfusion medicine and related expertise, including the involvement of other pathology divisions and other hospital departments
    • Manages appropriate referrals and transfers under standard and emergency situations
    • Participates in mandatory training and actively practices continual professional development in alignment with Sidra’s professional development programs to ensure maintenance of professional licensure/accreditation
    • Develops and/or delivers training programs to new employees on equipment and procedures in the area of operations in alignment with the department’s and Sidra’s training objectives and plans
    • Is an educational resource for the Division and contributes to the education of patients, staff and physicians and other stakeholders as required
    • Provides support and relief for other geneticists as required and as appropriate
    • Pathology Laboratory at Sidra including office space
    • Telemedicine consultation when developed and appropriate
    • Outpatient clinics, wards and procedure rooms in the clinic suites where appropriate
    • Site visits to referring and affiliated hospitals and clinics when requested and appropriate

Qualifications, experience and skills:


  • MD degree
  • Residency training in Pathology or equivalent
  • Subspecialty Fellowship in Hematopathology or Immunopathology (or equivalent training )
  • Certification by one of the medical specialty boards of the ABMS or equivalent Boards  in Hematopathology  or Immunopathology


10+ years post-residency clinical experience Hematopathology / immunopathology experience including 5+ years’ experience in clinical and academic leadership in Hematopathology or Immunopathology


  • Active license to practice Hematopathology or Immunopathlogy in home country or country of training (or equivalent certification).
  • American Board of Pathology or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Hematopathology or Immunology, or the UK Royal College of Pathologists in Hematology or Immunopathology or equivalent.

Job Specific Skills and Abilities

  • Specific clinical administrative and business skills associated with Hematopathology or Immunopathology
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership of teaching programs to medical students, residents, and allied health care personnel
  • Demonstrated staff and resource management skills
  • Demonstrated skills in clinical and technical skill in hematopathology, immunopathology, or transfusion medicine
  • Proficiency in hematopathology or immunopathology research and assay development and assessment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
