Clinically, the Division of Neonatology provides the latest techniques from an integrated team of (sub)specialists as well as the highest level of Patient-Centered Care for neonates. The Division of Neonatology provides excellence in clinical care, teaching and biomedical research. The Division of Neonatology at Sidra Medicine provides Level 4  state of the art Neonatology care to the whole population of Qatar and beyond. Currently, the NICU has 41 single-room beds (future expansion to 54 beds planned), is staffed with many Western-trained consultants, hospital neonatologists, advanced nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, nurses and Allied Health professionals and runs neurocritical care, hemodynamics, micropremie, perinatal consult, education/simulation, nutritional, quality improvement, neonatal ECMO, and various research programs, and a high-risk follow-up clinic. The Division supports a multi-site Pediatric residency program and will start a combined Neonatal fellowship program with WWRC/HMC to train future neonatologists for the state of Qatar on 01/07/2020. Together with all other pediatric subspecialties including Cardiac and all Pediatric Surgical subspecialties as well as excellent Imaging Services, Sidra Neonatology offers world-class health care for neonates.


Reporting to the Department Chair the Division Chief Neonatology provides clinical, education, research and executive management leadership for the division. The Division Chief Neonatology is a clinical and managerial leader working with the Sidra leadership executive team to develop and deliver strategy and business plans and is accountable for resources and performance in the designated division. He/she integrates research and education priorities into a program of excellent clinical service delivery. Specialized outpatient clinical services including prenatal consultations in close collaboration with the Division of Materno-fetal Medicine and a designated High-Risk Infant Follow-up clinic are managed by the division.
It is anticipated that the Division Chief will be able to continue with personal clinical educational and research activities albeit in a reduced and modified manner, and will have a full-time appointment to hold the position of Associate Professor or Professor of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar

  • Identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division of Neonatology and develops implementation strategies to achieve them.
  • Recommends clinical privileges, appointment, reappointment and corrective action for each member of the Division as well as promoting mentorship and academic career development for these staff members.
  • Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the division.
  • Accountable for the Division performance, Customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance of the Division.
  • Leads clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for all outpatient/inpatient activities of the Division.
  • Promotes leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention, and direct mission of excellence for the medical staff, and collaborates with the Department Chairs and other Division Chiefs to execute the strategies.
  • Responsible for all administrative related activities of the Division unless otherwise provided by the hospital, and serves on all requested committees, including medical executive committee, and appointing such committees as necessary to conduct the operations of the department.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide & support the provision of divisional services.
  • Guides and coaches the professional performance of all individuals in the Division who have delineated clinical privileges, including performance, and ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations (OPPE and FPPE).
  • Ensures that the staff of the Division provide services that are in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the Joint Commission International, Qatar Supreme Council of Health, and all other applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Implements the clinical service strategies and business plan for the Division of Neonatology.
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participates in the evaluation of products for use by different members of the Division of Neonatology to ensure their safety and efficacy.
  • Sets and achieves targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided and initiates actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives.
  • Works with the Department Chair to establish and update the work week standards for all physicians on staff and assures that there is appropriate clinical coverage for all patients requiring medical care from the Division of Neonatology.
  • Ensures all members of the Division optimize the use of electronic medical records.
  • Sets and achieves targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws of the State of Qatar.
  • In conjunction with the Department Chair, ensures the implementation of robust clinical governance structures and processes to ensure patient safety.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Research Officer and other Division heads of research, ensures a program of clinical and translational research is developed, promoted and delivered within the Division.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar, ensures there is an active and continuous program of undergraduate teaching within the Division of Neonatology to ensure an effective learning environment for medical students, residents, fellows and other medical staff.
  • Is actively involved in research, graduate teaching, and publication in higher impact refereed journals, advising of students and participation in academic services.
  • Ensures effective communication and involvement of all staff within the Division of Neonatology in regards to key decisions and initiatives
  • Works collaboratively with other Department Chairs, Chief Officers, and Executive Directors to achieve broad Sidra objectives.
  • Conducts other duties as may be directed by the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer.
  • Initiates, implements and oversees programs designed to foster positive relations between physicians and the hospital operations and administration.
  • Assists with marketing strategies to inform physicians and their staff of Sidra’s clinical diagnostic procedures, services and resources.
  • Promotes and evaluates physician community outreach programs as appropriate.
  • Develops, manages and supports physician and community relationships, coordinating and disseminating information to all stakeholders to solicit ongoing support from the State of Qatar.
  • Identifies and coordinates resolution of problems to improve physician utilization and patient satisfaction.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate systems of communication between Sidra and other providers of primary and advanced patient care in Qatar for the purpose of individual patient care and systemic safety and quality improvement.
  • Promotes and develops the Qatar Neonatal/Perinatal Network on close collaboration with WWRC/HMC and other key stakeholders in the state of Qatar.
  • Supports the development of Sidra as a world class regional center.
  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies.

Scope of clinical responsibilities for Division Neonatology:

  • Consultations for outpatient as well as inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated.
  • Coordinbates the care of all specialist inpatients.
  • Coordination of care for complicated cases.
  • Coordinates appropriate referrals and transfers under standard and emergency situations.


Sites of practice:

  • Sidra hospital and Outpatient Clinic building including procedure suites and clinical office space.
  • Telemedicine consultation when developed and appropriate.
  • Procedure rooms in the clinic suites (and in hospital when needed and appropriate).
  • All inpatients, including those in the critical care units.

Site visits to referring and affiliated hospitals and clinics when requested and appropriate



  • MD degree
  • Residency training in Pediatrics
  • Subspecialty Fellowship in Neonatology 


  • 10+ years post-residency clinical experience in the relevant field from a North American Academic/ Health care  Institution  or equivalent in UK, Republic of Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.
  • 5+ years in Academic leadership in area of specialty


  • Certification by American Board ABMS or equivalent 
  • Valid professional License in the country of origin or country of practice in the specialty area
