DEPARTMENT/SERVICE PROFILE:

The Division of Allergy & Immunology provides outpatient management and inpatient consultation and care for patients with all types of allergic diseases as well as patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases and immune dysregulation.  Our services include evaluation and management of Food Allergy, Atopic Dermatitis, Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma, Drug Allergy and Hypersensitivity, Urticaria including Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria, Angioedema including Hereditary Angioedema, Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases affecting the Humoral, Cellular and Innate Immune Systems and resulting Immune Dysregulation associated with these diseases. Currently, the division has three full-time physicians and one part-time physician and three nurses. The division members work closely with the Clinical Immunology Laboratory within the Department of Pathology and collaborate with Immunology research scientists in Sidra’s Research Center and at Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar. There is an outpatient infusion center where patients receive intravenous immunoglobulin and biologics and learn to administer subcutaneous immunoglobulin at home. Oral food challenges are performed in the outpatient clinic. The division provides ACGME-I accredited fellowship program to pediatric fellows in conjunction with the adult allergy & immunology program at Hamad Medical Corporation.  The goal of the division is to provide excellence in allergic and immunodeficiency clinical care, provide outstanding allergy and immunology education to fellows, residents and medical students and engage in translational research to better understand the pathogenesis of allergic and immunodeficiency diseases and help develop novel and targeted therapies for these diseases.

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Clinical Service Chief of Pediatrics, the Division Chief provides clinical, education, research and executive management leadership in Allergy & Immunology.  The Division Chief is a clinical and managerial leader working with the Sidra executive team to develop and deliver strategy and business plans and is accountable for resources and performance in Allergy & Immunology and integrates research and education priorities into a program of excellent clinical service delivery.  Specialized outpatient clinical services including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for complex and complicated procedures, consultations and case management, and other associated clinical and academic activites are managed in this Division.  It is anticipated that the Division Chief will be able to continue with personal clinical educational and research activities albeit in a reduced and modified manner, and will have a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar and hold the position of Associate Professor or Professor of Pediatrics- Allergy & Immunology.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division of Allergy & Immunology and collaborates on the implementation of strategies to achieve them.
  • Leads clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for the Outpatient/Inpatient activities of Allergy & Immunology services.
  • Promotes leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention, and direct mission of excellence for the medical staff, and collaborates with the Division Chiefs to execute the strategies.
  • Recommends clinical privileges, appointment, reappointment and corrective action for each member of the Division of Allergy & Immunology as well as promoting mentorship and academic career development for these staff members.
  • Responsible for all administrative related activities of the Allergy & Immunology Division unless otherwise provided for by the hospital, and serves on all requested committees including medical executive committee, and appointing such committees as necessary to conduct the function of the department.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide support provision of services to the Allergy & Immunology Clinic services.
  • Continues surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Allergy & Immunology Division who have delineated clinical privileges, including performance, and ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations (OPPE and FPPE).
  • Continues surveillance of patient care and the professional performance of all individuals in the Allergy & Immunology Division who have defined clinical privileges.
  • Ensures that the staff of the Allergy & Immunology Division provide services that are in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the Joint Commission International, Qatar Supreme Council of Health, and all other applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the Allergy & Immunology Division.
  • Implements the clinical service strategies and business plan for the Allergy & Immunology Division.
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participates in the evaluation of products for use by different members of the Allergy & Immunology Division to ensure their safety and efficacy.
  • Sets and achieves targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided and initiates actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives.
  • Works with the Clinical Service Chief of Pediatrics to establish and update the work week standards for all physicians on staff and assures that there is appropriate clinical coverage for all patients requiring medical care from the Allergy & Immunology Division (including emergency care).
  • Ensures all members of the Allergy & Immunology Division optimize the use of electronic medical records.
  • Sets and achieves targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws of the State of Qatar.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Service Chief, ensures the implementation of robust clinical governance structures and processes to ensure patient safety.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Research officer and division heads of research, ensures a program of clinical and translational research is developed and promoted and delivered within the Allergy & Immunology Division.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar ensures there is an active and continuous program of undergraduate teaching within the Allergy & Immunology Division to ensure an effective learning environment for students, residents, and medical staff.
  • Is actively involved in research, graduate teaching, and publication in higher impact refereed journals, advising of fellows, and students and participation in academic services.
  • Ensures effective communication with and involvement of all staff within the Allergy & Immunology Division in regards to key decisions and initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with other service chiefs, chief officers, and executive directors to achieve broad Sidra objectives.
  • Conducts other duties as may be directed by the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer.
  • Initiates, implements and oversees programs designed to foster positive relations between Allergy & Immunology physicians and the hospital operations and administration.
  • Assists with marketing strategies to inform physicians and their staff of Sidra’s clinical diagnostic procedures, services and resources.
  • Promotes and evaluates physician community outreach programs as appropriate.
  • Develops, manages and supports physician and community relationships, coordinating and disseminating information to all stakeholders to solicit ongoing support from the State of Qatar for Allergy & Immunology.
  • Promotes outreach and communications with non-Sidra to providers of Allergy & Immunology care to help Sidra function as the premier regional center in the Gulf Region.
  • Identifies and coordinates resolution of problems to improve physician utilization and patient satisfaction.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate systems of communication between Sidra and other providers of primary and advanced in Qatar for the purpose of individual patient care and systemic safety and quality improvement.
  • Supports the development of Sidra as a world class regional center.
  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Scope of clinical responsibilities for Division Allergy & Immunology:

  • Screening consultations for outpatient as well as inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated.
  • Coordinbates the care of all specialist inpatients.
  • Coordination of care for complicated cases.
  • Coordinates appropriate referrals and transfers under standard and emergency situations.

 

Sites of practice:

  • Outpatient clinic building at Sidra including procedure suites and clinical office space.
  • Telemedicine consultation when developed and appropriate.
  • Procedure rooms in the clinic suites (and in hospital when needed and appropriate).
  • All inpatients, including those in the critical care units.

Site visits to referring and affiliated hospitals and clinics when requested and appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA:

Qualifications:

  • MD degree (or equivalent)
  • Completion of residency program in the specialty area from an accredited Western Board
  • Fellowship in Pediatric Allergy-Immunology

Experience

  • 10+ years clinical experience
  • 3+ years in Academic leadership as section chief or chief of Pediatric Allergy/Immunology

Certification and Licensure

  • Active license to practice medicine in home country or country of training (or equivalent certifications).           
  • American Board Certification –Pediatrics or Equivalent.
  • American Board Certification –Pediatric Allergy/Immunology or equivalent.
