The Department of Pathology is a professional service that provides a full range of diagnostic testing and interpretations and serves additional functions including academic training and teaching.  The hospital-based laboratory will provide diagnostic testing in Anatomical Pathology including cytopathology, and surgical pathology. Blood Sciences including Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion.  Microbiology and Immunology including molecular pathology. HLA, Cytogenetics, Point of care testing (POCT) and a 24/7 Phlebotomy services. The Department of Pathology will be CAP, ISO-15189 and JCI accredited. The Department is supported by the Cerner PathNET LIS as part of an enterprise-wide CIS and will incorporate ward-based electronic testing, wireless and RFID technologies in Phlebotomy, as well as digital pathology.


Working with the Operations Manager and Technologist II, the Technologist I (screening cytologist) analyses cases and participates in the validation of all instruments and processes in Cytopathology. The incumbent reviews and demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures in accordance with CAP/ISO-15189 and JCI. The candidate assists in training of staff in specific techniques, as appropriate to their needs. The Technologist I performs a broad range of complex analytical work with a high level of individual skill and judgment, under minimal supervision. The candidate is required to observe and maintain a high standard of laboratory health, safety and risk procedures; and works to departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and current professional standards. The candidate is actively involved in the laboratory’s CPD program, attends internal and external lectures, and undertakes additional training as required. The Technologist I is part of a team of biomedical scientists delivering high quality services in this discipline.


Foremost Accountability:

  • Complex, analytical, interpretive microscopic work; screening with ensuing diagnostic interpretation of cytopathologic cases at the primary level

General Accountabilities:

  • Actively participates in the technical / cytopreparatory work of the section
  • Liaises with Technologist II and Operations Manager on:
    • cytopreparation, staining, testing, resulting and trouble-shooting as necessary
    • inventory management of reagents and consumables
    • implementation and/or validation procedures of new instruments as assigned
    • Records, reports and communicates quality control outcomes; and participates in rectifying areas of concern as deemed necessary
    • Maintains cooperation between the section and other pathology disciplines and personnel
    • Takes responsibility for the maintenance and safe use of instruments and supplies in the section
    • Ensures the provision of a high quality, cost-effective service with utmost emphasis on patient care and management
    • Actively participates in the overall development of diagnostic processes and platforms

    Screening-Specific Accountabilities:

    • Maintains professional membership, certification and licensure as deemed necessary, and Qatar (QCHP) license to practice
    • Maintains adequate knowledge of cytopathology standards of practice, and current reporting nomenclature
    • Maintains adequate knowledge of relevant cytomorphologic criteria and templates
    • Performs analytical screening of cytologic cases in accordance with established protocol, abiding by workload regulations pertaining to screening as stipulated through CAP/ISO-15189
    • Performs quality control and assurance procedures in all aspects of the service
    • Performs mandatory proficiency testing surveys; maintaining acceptable proficiency outcomes
    • Becomes proficient in the use of Cerner LIS for the tracking and verification of cytology cases
    • Becomes proficient in the use of the Hologic T5000 processor, and ThinPrep Imaging System (TIS), achieving appropriate proficiency
    • Carries out corrective procedures as advised when quality control outcomes are suboptimal
    • Ensures Institutional, Departmental, and Sectional policies and procedures are adhered to
    • Participates in the training (theoretical and practical) of technical staff in methodologies, principles and procedures as assigned
    • Participates in research and development as assigned
    • Complies with all laboratory health and safety procedures and policies, including cultural, health and safety issues as deemed appropriate.

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science or other relevant program
    • Formal training from an academy Subject: Diagnostic Cytology



    • 3+ years relevant experience in a similar role
    • Experience / understanding of LIS systems
    • 3+ years relevant experience
    • Experience in validation of new equipment and services

    Certification and Licensure

    • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), or Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification in Cytology, or equivalent
    • Professional license to practice cytology in country of origin


    Notation: Professional licensure to practice cytology in Qatar will be required. Currently, a pass in a QCHP-recognized Prometric examination is required to secure a license to practice in the State of Qatar, and before Sidra may issue a mobilization visa. This prometric exam currently tests for basic knowledge in general clinical pathology (i.e., clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, etc.…)

    Member of Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS; UK), ASCP (US) or equivalent

    Job Specific Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge / understanding of CAP, ISO-15189 and JCI standards and guidelines
    • Competent in Gynecological, Non-Gynecological and FNA cytopathologic interpretation
    • Thorough practical knowledge of standard cytopreparatory techniques, including liquid based technology
    • Competent in Papanicolaou and Diff-Quik staining and interpretation
    • Ability to work as part of a team, but also independently with minimal supervision
    • Ability to work under pressure
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    • Ability to adapt efficiently to changing working patterns
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
    • Fluency in written and spoken English
    • Experience with ThinPrep liquid based technology processing and ThinPrep Imaging System
    • Experience with the use of Cerner Millennium LIS
    • Experience in training technical personnel
    • Experience in evaluating new instruments and technology
    • Participation in FNA procedures to provide sampling adequacy assessment
