Department Profile:

The Allied Health Department is a diverse mix of professions and services working together in a family centered environment to provide patients with the comprehensive care they require.

The Speech and Language Pathology Department will provide services to neonatal, pediatric and adolescent patients in acute inpatient and specialist outpatient clinics.

The vision of the department is to deliver outstanding care, rehabilitation and patient/family support through the provision of high quality clinicians and services working in an interdisciplinary environment that integrates evidence based practice, education, research, and innovation into its model of care.


Job Summary:

The Assistant – Communication Disorder assumes responsibility for direct and indirect patient care activities as delegated and/or supervised by the Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP). As an active member of the patient care team, the Assistant supports the SLP with patient preparation, treatment and education as appropriate, incorporating principles of family-centered care.

Furthermore, the post holder is responsible for preparing therapy materials, reporting on therapy outcomes, performing routine maintenance on clinical equipment, and working with a licensed therapist to adjust therapy goals.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:
  •         Clinical:

    • Communicates effectively with patients, families and members of the health care team.

    • Assists with the provision of total individualized patient care as assigned according to the core standards of patient care and established policies and evidence based practices.

    • Carries out programmes/plans designed by the Speech and Language Pathologist with patients who have communication or swallowing disorders with individual patients or with groups as appropriate.

    • Facilitates SLP clinics including Feeding Clinics and Videofluroscopy Clinics under the guidance of a SLP.

    • Participates and reinforces in the education of  the patient/family and other members of the health care team regarding the Speech Language Pathology plans or equipment as advised by the SLP

    • Documents treatment provided and reports back to relevant Speech and Language Pathologist.

    • Documents all relevant information correctly, appropriately and in a timely manner

    • Reports any change or adverse reaction to treatment or plan to the relevant Speech and Language Pathologist.

    • Responds to patients needs during therapy sessions and provided encouragement or ceases treatment as appropriate.

    • Assistants Speech and Language Pathologist with the ongoing identification of patient needs.

    • Designs and develops appropriate low level communication and therapy aids with the support and direction of the Speech and Language Pathologists.

    • Assists in the organization, preparation of internal or external training/education sessions

    • Develops and maintains library of therapy resources and therapy equipment held within the department and helps to ensure equipment is complete, tidy and adheres to the Sidra infection control policies and procedures. 

    • Participates in the development of research as requested by the Speech and Language Pathologist.

    • Reports equipment failures, safety and security issues, and/or reduction of supply inventory to Speech Language Pathologist

    • Acts as an advocate by empowering patients and their families to make informed choices by providing them with information and support and directing to the relevant support services when appropriate.

    • Promotes patient satisfaction as a team member by demonstration of extraordinary service

    • Utilizes a professional practice framework and evidence based care; identifies improvements while minimizing risks creating care that is optimal for our patients and families. 

    • Promotes a safe environment and safe patient care by embracing a safety culture and identifying areas of risk to Speech Language Pathology Supervisor. Complies with policies for personal and patient safety and for the prevention of healthcare associated infections.

    • Takes an active role in service activities that contribute to excellence in outcomes, a positive patient experience and a healthy professional environment.

    • Contributes to the achievement of clinical quality outcome indicators and patient satisfaction

    • Liaises and works within an inter-professional practice model to ensure high quality, holistic, and safe family centered care

    • To be able to cope with occasional potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.

    • Communication:

    • To  be able to motivate and persuade patients through effective communication skills

    • To be able to communicate information when there maybe barriers to communication and understanding

    • Regularly reports to the Speech and language Pathology Supervisor

    • Liaises with members of the inter-disciplinary team with regard to patient care.

    • Liaises with managers, administrative and support staff as necessary.

    • Attends and contributes to meetings and case conferences as appropriate.



    • Responsible for own continued professional development

    • Maintains Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners licensure



    • Active member of the Speech and Language Pathology Team; attending relevant meetings as appropriate

    • Develops and maintains own knowledge, clinical skills including mandatory training and maintains a professional profile.  Provides documented evidence of performance and maintenance of skills consistent with position.

    • Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.

    • To participate PDP meetings and supervision sessions

    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    • Maintains confidentiality of women and children at all times.

    In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.
Essential Requirements:
  • Associate Degree in Speech Language Pathology OR Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology/Therapy.
  • 2+ years of experience in a similar role inclusive of :

    • Previous experience working in an education and /or  health care setting with children

    • Demonstrates a basic knowledge of the role of an SLP  

  • Current Professional License.
  • Eligible for license in Qatar as an SLP Assistant.
  • Experience working in a team.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in organizing data and recording information.
  • Good time keeping and consistence of attendance record.
  • Willing to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service.
  • Motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Bilingual in English and Arabic.
