DEPARTMENT PROFILE:

The Legal Services department provides legal services to cover a comprehensive array of legal issues facing this cutting edge academic medical research center.

The  Legal Services department is organized philosophically and practically as a collaborative undertaking, recognizing that each member of the department has made a deliberate and informed professional and personal choice to be a hospital attorney. The  Legal Services department is run with a view both to delivering prompt and excellent legal services to its clients, and to empowering each attorney to practice in a way that allows the attorney to grow and thrive. JOB SUMMARY:

The Director – Legal Services will spend about 50% of his or her time providing administrative leadership within the Legal Services Department. This will include line manager responsibility for Graduate Associates, Law Clerks, Paralegals, and possibility administrative staff and externship students. It will also include helping to set and monitor department goals, objectives, and KPIs; leadership of the Legal Services retreat; speaking about the Legal Services function in Sidra orientation sections; and representing the Legal Services Department in various institutional settings.

The other 50% of the Director’s time will be spent practicing law as a Legal Services lawyer within his or her areas of expertise.

 

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Supervises Graduate Associates, Law Clerks, Paralegals, and possibility administrative staff and externship students.
  • With the General Counsel, sets and monitors department goals, objectives, and KPIs.
  • Plans and leads the Legal Services retreat and annual client survey.
  • Prepares activation reports for the SPMO.
  • Represents the Legal Services department in various institutional settings, including new staff induction.
  • Negotiates workable solutions to complex and sensitive legal issues through the use of influence and persuasion.
  • Identifies training needs and effectively trains others on legal topics as needed.
  • Displays exceptional listening skills even in difficult situations, actively questioning and listening to all parties to understand positions (including issues that are unstated or not obvious).
  • Displays a thorough understanding of the business model and mission of the organization, including competition and risk factors.
  • Sets clear priorities in order to focus on those responsibilities and tasks that add the most value, and continually re-evaluates priorities in relation to changing business/client context.
  • Keeps meetings and groups on track through planning and leadership.
  • Continually strives to find more efficient processes, anticipating time constraints, conflicts, and resource shortages downstream.
  • Meets work demands with considerable stamina, persistence, and a consistent focus on client needs and concerns, making extra effort and sacrifice to meet urgent requests.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships and trust with both senior leadership and colleagues in other functional areas of the organization.
  • Keeps the General Counsel informed on administrative staff developments and resource requirements.
  • Assumes responsibility for the Legal Services department in the absence of the General Counsel.
  • Maintains a collegial approach to problem-solving and a willingness to engage in clear and transparent dialogue about both legal and non-legal issues.
