Department: The Department of Pharmacy provides world class pharmaceutical care to a diverse patient base of women and children of both local and international origin. Our expert staff is dedicated to the provision of world class specialized pediatric and maternal health pharmaceutical care in an empathetic and caring clinical environment.  We provide the highest level of care in both inpatient and ambulatory settings in a 399 bed facility utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and technologies.
JOB SUMMARY: The Clinical Pharmacist - Staff Development and Pharmacy Residency is an integral part of the medical team. S/he works to develop the hospital Pharmacy Residency Program and undergraduate pharmacy training program. The incumbent coordinates continuing education program, staff development, in-service training program, patient education activity, and conducts a coordinated research. The Clinical Pharmacist - Staff Development and Pharmacy Residency also participates in medical rounds, assists the multi-disciplinary team to select the most cost-effective evidence-based treatment for the patients, performs pediatric dosing based on Pharmacokinetic parameters, manages Narrow Therapeutic Index drugs by using lab values to calculate and predict desired drug levels and participates in discharge planning and medication reconciliation.  S/he also participates in appropriate committees and provides valuable input  as well as provides teaching of medication intricacies to Medical and Pharmacy Students and residents.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:  

Key Decision: Designs how Staff competency and education Programs of medication-use systems will be monitored, reviewed and improved.

Impact: Directly affects the level of Staff Competency & Education in the department.

 

Key Decision: Along with the Manager, Pharmacy Clinical Services and Director of Pharmacy, designs and oversees the Residency & Training Program for Pharmacists at Sidra Medicine.

Impact: Directly affects the level of care delivered to our patients through training and development.

 

STAFF DEVELOPMENT & PHARMACY RESIDENCY:

  • Develops, implements, and coordinates the hospital Pharmacy Residency Training Program based on ASHP/QCHP standards.

  • Develops and supervises a comprehensive training program for the pharmacists involved in the Pharmacy Residency Program.

  • Coordinates the undergraduate pharmacy training program for students assigned to the hospital by the Qatar University and other Pharmacy Schools.

  • Coordinates staff development and continuing education activities for all Pharmacy staff.

  • Orients and trains all new Pharmacy staff.

  • Participates in the orientation program for medical and nursing.

  • Coordinates the training programs for visiting pharmacists.

  • Organizes and coordinates pharmacy-based research projects; assists as needed in the conduct of other hospital-based clinical studies involving drugs.

  • Prepares and participates in the development of all drug related patient education materials.

  • Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.

  • Participates in self and others' education, training and development, as applicable.

  • Participates in projects with the local College of Pharmacy and local Pharmacy organizations as needed.

 

CLINICAL:

  • Assesses the status of the patient’s health problems and determines whether the prescribed medications are optimally meeting the patient’s needs and goals of care.

  • Fully integrates hers/his specialized knowledge of the scientific and clinical use of medications, including medication action, dosing, adverse effects, and drug interactions, when performing patient care activities in collaboration with other members of the health care team.

  • Utilizes professional expertise to provide patients with customized treatment strategies to best meet individual patient needs.

  • Provides medication information to healthcare professionals, including but not limited to, Prescribers and Nurses.

  • Participates in patient care rounds when requested.

  • Designs, recommends, monitors, and evaluates patient specific pharmacotherapeutic regimens.

  • Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely, as per policy and procedure.

 

COMPETENCY:

  • Provides in-service education to Pharmacy and non-Pharmacy personnel.

  • Participates in the orientation and training of Pharmacy students, residents and newly hired Pharmacists and Technicians.

  • Communicates effectively with healthcare professionals, patients and family members where appropriate.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the compounding of extemporaneous preparations.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic technique during the preparation of sterile pharmaceutical products.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of departmental equipment and software where applicable for assigned duties.

  • Has (or will obtain) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and trains with code team and attends code situations, as required by assigned care center(s).

  • Maintains professional competency and skills sufficient to meet current and future needs of the facility.

 

OPERATIONAL:

  • Contributes to the achievement of goals of the department through personal effort and influence over others.

  • Verifies medication orders for accuracy and clinical appropriateness, checks medications prepared by Pharmacy Technicians for accuracy prior to dispensing and notifies appropriate persons if changes are required.

  • Provides accurate shift-to-shift communication regarding unsolved situations requiring future action.

  • Provides professional, courteous customer service to all customer types (patients/family, Nursing, Medical Staff, others).

                                 

REGULATORY:

  • Complies with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements for a specific practice setting.

  • Completes all required Continuing Education activities to maintain licensure to practice as a Pharmacist in Qatar, per the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP).

  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA:
ESSENTIAL PREFERRED
 
Education Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an ACPE / or equivalent accredited School of Pharmacy or Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (PGDipClinicPharm)
 Residency or fellowship in a specialty area in Pediatrics or Women’s Health
Experience  3+ years’ experience* as a licensed/registered clinical Pharmacist/Residency Coordinator/Staff Development-Education Pharmacist in an accredited Healthcare facility or related environment
* Experience can be pre or post PharmD qualification
**Pharmacy internship period is not counted in the experience
 • Clinical pharmacy experience in a hospital setting
• Staff Development & Research Coordinator experience.
• Completion of Residency Program
Certification and License  • Licensed in Pharmacy in country of origin
• Obtain State of Qatar Pharmacy License after on boarding.
 Member of professional hospital pharmacy association in country of origin
 Job Specific Skills and Abilities
 • Staff development and Residency Coordinator experience.
• Excellent knowledge utilizing unit dose & I.V. admixture experience.
• Excellent clinical knowledge as it pertains to medication and disease management
• Demonstrated ability to work with Pharmacy Information Systems
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
• Fluency in written and spoken English
