DEPARTMENT/BRANCH PROFILE: The Department of Pathology is a professional service that provides a full range of diagnostic testing, and interpretation, and serves additional functions including academic training and teaching. The hospital -based laboratory provides diagnostic testing in Blood Sciences, which includes Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion; Microbiology and Immunology, which includes Molecular Pathology; Anatomical Pathology, which includes Cytopathology and Histology; Pathology Genetics; together with Point of Care testing (POCT) and 24/7 Phlebotomy services. The Department of Pathology is CAP-accredited and will be ISO 15189 and JCI accredited. The Department is supported by the Cerner Millennium PathNET LIS as part of an enterprise wide CIS, and incorporates ward-based electronic testing, wireless and RFID technologies in POC and Phlebotomy, as well as digital pathology.
JOB SUMMARY:

The Technologist II – Pathology Genetics performs DNA/RNA diagnostic testing, which involves the following: Sanger-based sequencing with the ability to perform wet-lab as well as dry-lab sequence data analysis; Fragment analysis using capillary electrophoresis [i.e. for Fragile X syndrome, MLPA etc]; Real-time PCR; and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), together with the interpretation of NGS data. Familiarity with the documentation required for test validations is highly desirable

The Technologist II – Pathology Genetics is part of a team of clinical scientists and Medical technologists delivering high quality services in their specialty and has operational oversight of a team within the department. The Technologist II – Pathology Genetics assists in the commissioning of equipment, and IT systems, together with the training of staff, and preparing policies and procedures in accordance with CAP-ISO15189 and JCI. Responsibilities also include the analysis and checking of complex results and the preparation of clinical reports, monitoring of quality indicators, and service development as appropriate. The Technologist II – Pathology Genetics provides professional support in the area of specialty to the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics.  

 

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
 
  • Actively participates in performing the technical and analytical work of the section, including analyzing and checking of complex results and the preparation of a wide range of clinical reports.
  • Contributes to the preparation of policies and procedures for the Laboratory.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of a designated area and ensures the quality of results.
  • Implements new methodologies as directed by the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics.
  • Oversees the operations of a subsection within the Laboratory Genetics Division, responsible for the day-to-day running of this team.
  • Actively supervises the Technologist I staff within the section to ensure an efficient throughput of work.
  • Leads by good example in order to motivate staff to create high quality work, interest and contribution.
  • Assists the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics in the implementation of management decisions affecting the sections.
  • Liaises with the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics on appropriateness of tests, results and additional testing as required.
  • Monitors, records and reports back results, participating in discussion to rectify areas of concern if necessary.
  • Maintains co-operation between the sections and between disciplines by regular communication with Technologists I and senior staff
  • In liaison with the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics, ensures adequate stocks of reagents and consumables are available for the efficient running of the service.
  • In liaison with the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics, provides technical advice on, and assists in the selection / validation of new equipment.
  • Takes responsibility for the maintenance and safe use of equipment within the section.
  • Helps to ensure the provision of a high quality, cost-effective service with the emphasis on quality assurance in all aspects of the section supervised by monitoring and audit of internal quality control.
  • Uses LIS to generate workload statistics and run queries.  Assess quality of data according to defined criteria.
  • Participates in the external quality assurance schemes that the department subscribes to.
  • Carries out corrective action as advised when the quality control procedures fail.
  • Assists in ensuring achievement of and maintaining CPA-ISO15189 standards in the section.
  • Ensures policies and procedures for the sections are adhered to.
  • Participates in the training (theoretical and practical) of technical staff in methodologies, principles and procedures by way of tutorials, presentations and seminars.
  • Participates in research and development as directed by the Supervisor – Pathology Genetics.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

ESSENTIAL

PREFERRED

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Biological science or other relevant program

Master’s degree in Biological science or other relevant program

Experience

  • 5+ years relevant experience in a CAP or ISO15189 or equivalent laboratory
  • Experience / understanding of LIS operations
  • Experience in validation of new equipment and services
  • Experience in team management

 

Certification and Licensure

  • Specialty (ASCP), HCPC or ACC/CMGS certificate of competence in Molecular Genetics, Genetic Technology or equivalent in country of origin
  • Prometrics exam in country of origin prior to submission of resignation
  • Meets the requirement for licensure by the Qatar Council of Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP)
  • Licensed and/or certified by an accredited licensure body in the home country

Job Specific Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to perform molecular assays (Sanger sequencing, fragment analysis, real-time PCR) using DNA extracted from multiple tissue sources, and FFPE material
  • Demonstrated ability to perform next generation sequencing using both MiSeq/NextSeq and PGM platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and optimize work practices, and train others in molecular techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with a variety of sequence analysis software and to prepare clinical reports
  • Broad knowledge covering a range of Cytogenetic techniques. Documented proof of competency will be required.
  • Knowledge / understanding of ISO15189/CPA/CAP/ JCI standards and guidelines
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting meetings and making presentations
  • Able to work as part of team, but also independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent communications skills both written and oral
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
