Once fully operational by mid-2018, Sidra Medicine will handle 275,000 outpatient appointments, 11,000 procedures, 100,000 emergency attendances and deliver over 9,000 babies per year, adding capacity to a rapidly growing population and delivering world-class specialist care.

The hospital will include 10 operating theatres, 400 beds, 100 percent single rooms with a private bathroom, a birthing center and an emergency department.

DEPARTMENT / BRANCH PROFILE:

Sidra Medical & Research Center’s Department of Surgery will provide world class excellence in clinical care, teaching and biomedical research for the women and children of Qatar.  The Department of Surgery coordinates its surgical services with Hamad Medical Corporation and collaborates in research and educational activity with Weill Cornell Medical College - Qatar.  The level of national interest and support in medical quality, education, innovative research and technology has already resulted in significant discoveries and highly functional research organizations that will collaborate with Sidra.

The Department of Surgery at Sidra Medical and Research Center offers a comprehensive range of routine and advanced Surgical Services for women and children, equipped with state of the art technology in a completely digital hospital environment. The Department of Surgery is made up of the following services, delivered in accordance with best practice standards whilst being driven by clinical evidence methodologies, in a patient-centered, highly collaborative environment: in the pediatric population: General and Thoracic Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngologic Surgery, Ophthalmologic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Dental Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Urology.  In addition, surgical treatment for acute gynecological surgical conditions will be provided.  Within each of these subspecialties, care for the spectrum of diseases seen in the pediatric population will be provided. 

A specific goal of the department is to conduct research into the surgically treated diseases seen in Qatar, evaluating both the pathophysiology and treatments. The Department will evaluate and provide novel and upcoming therapies to our patients and participate in the development of new technologies.  The department will provide leadership and faculty for the teaching of medical students, residents and advanced trainees, so that Sidra becomes a leader in the education of surgeons for the future. It is anticipated that, by providing specialist and subspecialist expertise in an integrated team environment and concomitantly conducting research, Sidra will become a substantive referral center for patients within and outside Qatar.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Urotherapist through his/her practice provides consultations for patients with urinary incontinence supervised by the urologist, performs procedures such as urinary catheterizations, urodynamic studies, biofeedback sessions, urinary drainage tube irrigations, ultrasonic bladder scanning, education of other healthcare professionals, patients, and families, and reinforcement of home-going education related to self-catheterization or urinary drainage tube irrigations. The Urotherapist is responsible for responding to calls on the patient care units, the emergency department and collaborates with outpatient clinic teams as required.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Makes treatment decisions under the supervision of the Attending Physician essential for the management of patients with urinary incontinence

  • Provides relevant input on pre and post op patients with complex genitourinary reconstructions

  • Uses case management skills and principles in the planning and evaluation of client care across a continuum.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to prevent or limit unsafe or unethical health and care practices by others.

  • Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient.

  • Communicates confidently and effectively with other workers both in collegial and subordinate positions.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to empower the client populations in attaining and maintaining maximal functional wellness.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to ensure the efficient use of human and material resources.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to implement outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to ensure assessment of physical, cognitive, and social functional ability of the client in all developmental stages.

  • Plans implements and evaluates processes to facilitate the use of assessment findings to diagnose, plan, deliver, and evaluate quality care stages.

  • Performs designated procedures after demonstrating competency and according to written standardized procedure where applicable.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions. Individualizes the plan of care and treatment based upon the desired treatment outcomes.

  • Utilizes effective communication and interactions with patients, family, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.

  • Acts as advisor and facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • Provides counseling/anticipatory guidance to patient, family and/or staff regarding Urology-related needs.

  • Participates in research design, implementation and interpretation.

  • Applies research-based Pediatric Urodynamic knowledge as the foundation for evidence-based practice.

  • Designs and Redesigns patient centered care processes based on analysis of outcomes and evidence-based knowledge.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to facilitate the use of clinical judgment and decision-making skills to bring multiple perspectives into the interpretation of situations and problems encountered.

  • Applies an ethical decision-making planning framework to clinical situations that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics, and law and respects diverse values and beliefs.

  • Uses epidemiological, social, and environmental data to draw inferences regarding the health status of client populations.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to ensure the use of outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care through the acquisition of data and the questioning of inconsistencies, allowing for the revision of actions and goals.

  • Participates in audit and research planning that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of treatment interventions.

  • Plans, implements and evaluates processes to facilitate an individual’s capacity to assume responsibility for self-care.

  • Assists educational specialists and clinicians in the development and implementation of educational/orientation documents and participates in orientation educational activities.

  • Takes into consideration the appropriateness and cost effectiveness of services utilized (both human and material resources) in providing care

  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others

  • Assess the learning needs of patient and families, and develops and/or implements teaching programs to meet these identified needs in the hospital or community.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS - SELECTION CRITERIA:
  • Bachelor of Science in Urology Technology/ Bachelor Degree in Allied Health Profession/ Bachelor of Science in Nursing

  • Or equivalent Master Degree in clinical science

  • 4+ years of clinical experience in the field of Urotherapy including Urodynamic evaluations

  • Experience in teaching both patients and other members of the healthcare community in urodynamic and biofeedback techniques

  • Basic Life Support Certification

  • Experience in organizing data and generating thorough, accurate, timely reports

  • Demonstrated experience with Clinical Information Systems (CIS)

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate Pediatric Urodynamic and Urotherapy knowledge and skills acquired throughout the didactic and clinical education experiences

  • Demonstrated ability to use risk analysis tools to anticipate risks to client safety

  • Demonstrated ability to Access, critique, and analyze information sources

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to design, coordinate and evaluate Pediatric Urodynamic and Urotherapy plans of care

  • Demonstrated ability to delegate, supervise, and evaluate the performance of treatment interventions

  • Demonstrated ability to manage group processes to meet care objectives and complete health care team responsibilities
