JOB SUMMARY: The Supervisor – Respiratory Therapy Services works closely with the Manager- Respiratory Therapy Services to oversee the quality of clinical practice provided by Respiratory Therapists to ensure adequate training of staff, appropriately allocating resources, and monitoring work. He/ she provides leadership and guidance to the respiratory therapy staff and serves as a resource for the respiratory therapy department, nursing, physicians and all other hospital personnel. The incumbent provides a comprehensive range of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures to patients requiring basic and advanced cardiopulmonary and related services. Under direction of a licensed physician, who has special expertise in respiratory care, the Supervisor – Respiratory Therapy Services utilizes the application of scientific principles for the identification, prevention, remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction thereby promoting optimum health and function.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Makes decisions related to the plans of care for women/ children.

  • Contributes to the design, development and implementation of processes, policies and guidelines

  • Supports and provides direction for evidence-based practice by participating in and encouraging the respiratory care staff in evaluative research activities

  • Assumes responsibility for scheduling and assignment of personnel and ensures that assignments reflect appropriate utilization of personnel, considering scope of practice, competencies, patient needs and complexity of care.

  • Coordinates all emergency responses.

  • Evaluates patient care plans.

  • Provides orientation, education and training as needed.

  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a performance improvement program; Takes measures to continuously improve the quality of services delivered.

  • Assures respiratory care staff competency and safety.

  • Participates in the developing, reviewing, and updating of Respiratory Therapy policies and procedures relevant to the patient population

  • Appraises performance of all staff members and develops performance plans and professional goals.

  • Ensures quality control and proper auditing within the department related to billing, documentation, infection control, or other related matters

  • Monitors adherence to policy, procedures and practice guidelines.

  • Coordinates the evaluation of products/ equipment.

  • Coordinates and monitors departmental improvement projects.

  • Assists with all departmental clinical research projects.

  • Provides input into departmental equipment selection and function.

  • Assures safe and appropriate working environment.

  • Liaises with the procurement team to ensure appropriate supply inventory.

  • Participates in recruitment and selection of Respiratory Therapists.

  • Participates in and/ or leads departmental and/or multidisciplinary committees and meetings.

  • Monitors and reports all patient care, safety, medication, technical and employee incidents.

  • Assures appropriate staff and skill level for all areas of the hospital.

  • Provides complex therapy requiring considerable independent judgment, such as caring for patients who require inhaled nitric oxide therapy and high frequency oscillatory ventilation.

  • Assumes on-call responsibilities as needed.

  • Serves as a role model for Respiratory Care; teaches, mentors, and coaches as necessary and develops direct reports to become preceptors.

  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies and legal requirements.

  • Provides patient care as needed

  • Participates in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication and teamwork. Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.

  • Actively welcomes and provides support for new staff/ students to the unit. Contributes to the retention of all staff to meet the unit specific turnover rate goal; Participates in retention activities.

  • Maintains a professional demeanor at all times; Acts as a role model for direct reports.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

ESSENTIAL

PREFERRED

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy

Master’s Degree in a relevant field

Experience

5+ years relevant clinical experience including 2+ years supervisory experience

 

Certification and Licensure

  • Current registration and license from Country of Origin

     

  • RRT, BLS, NRP, ACLS, and PALS (or equivalent)

Lean/Six Sigma Training
