Once fully operational by mid-2018, Sidra Medicine will handle 275,000 outpatient appointments, 11,000 procedures, 100,000 emergency attendances and deliver over 9,000 babies per year, adding capacity to a rapidly growing population and delivering world-class specialist care.

The hospital will include 10 operating theatres, 400 beds, 100 percent single rooms with a private bathroom, a birthing center and an emergency department.

Department: The Research Department will house several hundred researchers working on many aspects of feto-maternal health. It will cover basic, translational, clinical trials and informatics research. The department comprises of two research floors totaling 10,000M2 and 9 smaller “satellite laboratories” throughout the hospital. The department will house basic laboratories as well as state of the art core facilities, e.g. genomics, medicinal chemistry and imaging. The Research Department will include a GMP Cell and Gene Therapy manufacturing facility and principal investigators who will carry out IRB approved translational and clinical research studies some of which may involve the administration of cell and gene therapies.
Job Summary: The Research Specialist I - Bioinformatics performs routine and moderately complex tasks related to administration, use and development of bioinformatics resources    He/she works with general supervision. The incumbent is required to exercise judgment in making technical decisions related to delegated tasks and escalating complex issues.
Key Role Accountabilities:
  • Maintains GXB (Gene expression Browser) bioinformatics web service by setting up servers, accounts, uploading datasets and updating platforms.

  • Supports researchers in data upload, analysis and platform updates.

  • Improves and optimizes bioinformatics workflows and resolve related issues.

  • Makes recommendations to the Investigator regarding improvements in methods and processes.

  • Solves moderately complex problems and performs a specific variety of technical assignments within broader projects.

  • Contributes to ongoing research projects that include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling and processing data.

  • Assists in procurement of additional/new funding through contributions to technical proposal preparation and/or presentations.

  • Trains staff in development and implementation of bioinformatics workflows.

  • Stays current with literature in ongoing and proposed research projects.

  • Presents ongoing work and methods to research group.

  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

Qualifications, Experience and Skills – Selection Criteria:

 

ESSENTIAL

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in the quantitative or life science field

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Biostatistics or Bioinformatics

Experience

3+ years of relevant experience

  • Experienced in Linux environment.

     

  • Experienced in web service management based on tomcat and apache.

     

  • Experienced in cloud systems such as Amazon Web Service.

     

  • Experienced in Bioinformatics scripting (R, shell, etc.)

     

  • Demonstrated functional knowledge and analytic experience in relevant field.

     

  • Evidence of ongoing continual development and personal development.

     

  • Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.

This is a grants funded position for a period of up to 2 years.  

The title of the project is: “Establishing a Foundation for “Collective Data”-enabled Biomedical Research in Qatar”. 

It focuses on the reuse of vast collections of available public “Omics" datasets. More specifically, it explores how such resource can be used to foster the discovery of biomedical knowledge and the training of early career biomedical researchers.
