Department Profile:

Sidra Medical & Research Center’s Department of Surgery will provide world class excellence in clinical care, teaching and biomedical research for the women and children of Qatar. The Department of Surgery coordinates its surgical services with Hamad Medical Corporation and collaborates in research and educational activity with Weill Cornell Medical College - Qatar. The level of national interest and support in medical quality, education, innovative research and technology has already resulted in significant discoveries and highly functional research organizations that will collaborate with Sidra.

The Department of Surgery at Sidra Medical and Research Center offers a comprehensive range of routine and advanced Surgical Services for women and children, equipped with state of the art technology in a completely digital hospital environment. The Department of Surgery is made up of the following  services, delivered in accordance with best practice standards whilst being driven by clinical evidence methodologies, in a patient-centered, highly collaborative environment: in the pediatric population: General and Thoracic Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngologic Surgery, Ophthalmologic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Dental Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Urology.  In addition, surgical treatment for acute gynecological surgical conditions will be provided.  Within each of these subspecialties, care for the spectrum of diseases seen in the pediatric population will be provided. 

A specific goal of the department is to conduct research into the surgically treated diseases seen in Qatar, evaluating both the pathophysiology and treatments. The Department will evaluate and provide novel and upcoming therapies to our patients and participate in the development of new technologies.  The department will provide leadership and faculty for the teaching of medical students, residents and advanced trainees, so that Sidra becomes a leader in the education of surgeons for the future. It is anticipated that, by providing specialist and subspecialist expertise in an integrated team environment and concomitantly conducting research, Sidra will become a substantive referral center for patients within and outside Qatar.

Job Summary:

The Head Pediatric Optometrist is the senior Optometrist and is charged with heading up and running the Optometry Service, including clinical supervision for the junior optometrist(s), nursing staff, and Allied Health personnel liaising with the Optometry service.

The incumbent functions as a highly skilled independent medical practitioner to diagnose, manage and provide first line treatment for conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system in children and infants. He/ she is expected to function at a very high level alongside physician partners from the Medical Staff. General optometrists with only adult experience will usually not have the specialized skill set to perform to the level of expectation of the service.

The Head Pediatric Optometrist is responsible for providing patient care, supervising junior level personnel, and making sure that all aspects of the service are running efficiently. This includes responsibility for consumables, scheduling, and clinical operations. The Head Pediatric Optometrist is also responsible for organizing and delivering educational materials and clinical in-services for the above personnel as well.

The successful candidate will be inquisitive, independent, academic-minded, aware of his or her own limitations, collegial, and excellent with patients and colleagues.

Key Role Accountabilities:    
  • Provides full service complex refractive management for pediatric patients, including aphakic contact lens management, treatment of high myopia, and refraction of post-surgical patients. 

  • Works both independently and in concert with ophthalmologists

  • Performs examinations to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases

  • Tests patients’ visual acuity, depth and color perception, anterior segment health, strabismus and ocular motility evaluation, glaucoma evaluation

  • Performs dilated funduscopy both via direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and performs dry and cycloplegic refractions

  • Prescribes eyeglasses and low-vision rehabilitation, including low vision aids

  • Performs and interprets ophthalmic diagnostic tests such as Humphrey visual fields, pachymetry, and assessment of ocular pressure

  • Interprets visual fields, ocular coherence tomography, B scan and A scan measurements, and performs intraocular lens calculations for cataract surgery

  • Administers therapy to patients to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems and prescribes first line therapy to treat some eye diseases

  • Performs evaluation of inpatient consultations and emergency or walk-in patients as needed

  • Participates in research studies and mentors junior faculty members in their own studies. Attendance at departmental meetings is required. Participation in regional academic meetings is desirable.

  • Provides guidance and assistance to junior level providers as needed during performance of their duties

  • Provides educational leadership and training in his or her field for other department members and for student and physician learners. 

  • May rotate to different clinic locations or offsite partner facilities as required

  • Provides clear explanations and eye care instructions to patients and families. 

  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies


In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.
Essential Requirements:
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) Degree; graduation from an accredited School of Optometry accredited by the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in Optometric practice and a minimum of 2 years in a pediatric specialty practice or greater than 50% pediatric patients
  • Optometrist license or equivalent
  • Proficient in care of such eye conditions as anterior segment disorders, glaucoma, strabismus, retinal disease, and neurologic problems.

  • Highly proficient with ophthalmic diagnostic tools including performance and interpretation of visual fields

  • Fluency in the use of intraocular pressure measuring devices and pachymetry, basic interpretation of fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, and excellent at refraction and cycloplegic refraction in infants and children, including those who have had cataract or anterior segment surgery. 

  • Ability to work efficiently in a high volume environment. (Vision therapy and developmental optometry services will not be provided). 

  • Excellent skills in performing cycloplegic retinoscopy in pediatric patients

  • Proficiency with contact lens dispensing and care, including aphakic fits, keratoconus therapeutic fitting, and post refractive surgical fits

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Proficiency with EMR

  • Excellent fluency in written and spoken English
