Once fully operational by mid-2018, Sidra Medicine will handle 275,000 outpatient appointments, 11,000 procedures, 100,000 emergency attendances and deliver over 9,000 babies per year, adding capacity to a rapidly growing population and delivering world-class specialist care.

The hospital will include 10 operating theatres, 400 beds, 100 percent single rooms with a private bathroom, a birthing center and an emergency department.


The Sidra Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) is a results oriented and quality driven department that utilizes the various skills and capabilities of its staff as required in fulfilling its responsibilities towards the organization. Reporting through Support Services the BME’s main responsibility is to assess, plan, review and operate services to manage the fully digital and paperlite environment of advanced and integrated medical and specialized testing equipment in a secure and safe working environment. The department utilizes a quality management system and is to be compliant with JCIA and all its reporting requirements.


The Specialist – Emerging Technologies is responsible for full planning and implementation of RTLS and Nurse-Call Systems, including the coordination of all functional testing, networking issues, repair/ maintenance activities and programming problems. Functions as the hospital-wide Advocate and Super User of RTLS and related electronic tracking technologies from initial investigation, to staff orientation/ training and implementation of newly acquired electronic tracking programs. Interacts with clinical and business staff, as well as various IT groups, external departments and outside vendors and consultantsResponsible for all aspects of response and support of front-end Nurse Call issues including both front-end and application configuration, spare parts requirements/inventory and coordination with BME-CSE staff for any further network/workflow configuration changes/ support.Tasked to Investige and evaulaute emerging healthcare technologies that would further support safer and more efficient clinical and staff workflow processes and would be responsible for complex assignments requiring independence, decision making and project management skills

    • Promotes and maintains effective communication with all team members of the BME department towards achieving the departmental objectives.

    • Participates in the use of a paperless, CAFM integrated, equipment maintenance program incorporating the transfer of test data from BME specific automated test equipment to generate accurate data and relevant histories in compliance with JCIA standards.

    • Manages hospital-wide support for RTLS, RFID, and related electronic tracking technologies, including implementation and development of policies, procedures, processes and systems to ensure compliance with all relevant Sidra Medical and Research Center requirements.

    • Provides expert advice in all integration meetings involving the PSV, CIS and Sidra IM-IT teams to help develop effective workflows that are based on existing RTLS and RFID tag capabilities (both active & passive as applicable).

    • Develops, supports and maintains systems documentation and procedures as needed and provides training to other IT staff and user clients as appropriate.

    • Coordinates interactions and activities of vendors, both on-site and off-site as related to systems or areas supported.

    • Responsible for all electronic tracking device hardware and application software in terms of safety, service, efficiency and ensuring systems are fit for purpose.

    • Coordinates and participates directly in the support of integration applications e.g. Rauland Borg Nurse Call System, Cloverleaf Integration Engine, Fusion Security System, etc..

    • Supports and maintains the AeroScout RTLS: Tags, Servers, Application support, & vendor management.

    • Manages all aspects of active and passive RFID tagging processes for all assets groups (i.e. medical and non-medical equipment including FF&E, IT, SIM, Laundry/ Uniforms, staff and patients) including programing and tag location/ orientation-attachment decisions to ensure accurate and consistent tag read rates for all tag types utilizing both Wi-Fi and handheld fixed readers as applicable.

    • Performs daily system monitoring activities to ensure automatic data collection is functioning correctly.

    • Troubleshoots problems end-to-end, identifying potential root cause, coordinating service/support between Clinical Engineering, IT, Network support, server support, medical device vendors etc..

    • Works with IT to coordinate security management processes including risk and vulnerability analysis and related documentation associated with interconnected/ integrated medical systems.

    • Works with clinical and application stakeholders in developing specifications for new interfaces.

    • Tests and provides quality control for implementation of new interfaces.

    • Ensures the availability of relevant electronic data to the BME director for analysis of maintenance operations and performance as required.

    • Acts as a hospital wide RTLS advocate and technology expert on hospital committees as required.

    • Performs all duties in a professional, effective and confidential manner.

    • Demonstrates an on-going commitment to service quality improvement, and ensures a high level commitment to professional job performance and customer service throughout Sidra.

    In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra during this pre-operational phase, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.






  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic/ Biomedical Engineering
  • IT certifications for support of healthcare IT environments or medical device integrations to those IT environments.


  • 5+ years in an electronic support capacity (IT, BME, Computer Science, Communications industry, etc.)


  • Additional 3+ years’ experience in the research and deployment of electronic tracking systems resulting in a sound understanding of both the current technologies as well as the development of the overall industry.
  • Electronic tracking experience in the Healthcare environment


  • Experience with passive and active RFID tacking healthcare solutions.


  • Experience in affiliated IT field.


  • Work experience in a hospital environment of 250 bed or larger.

Certification and Licensure



  • BMET/ICC certified.


  • Combination of: Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) RFID+ Certification or equivalent (RFID PRO/ RFID PRO + CCC).

    Job Specific Skills and Abilities

    • A demonstrable ability to evaluate new/ emerging electronic tracking technologies, oversee their implementation, ongoing maintenance and staff orientation programs.


    • Skilled in the use of electronic medical equipment database programs.


    • Comfortable in the use of Microsoft Plan and Visio


    • Familiar with the JCIA, AAMI, ECRI, NFPA, ANSI, FDA, etc. and able to test devices to the latest standards.


    • Proficient with Office programs.


    • Multicultural workplace experience.


    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite


    • Fluency in written and spoken English
    • Work experience within the healthcare environment with both passive and active RFID tacking solutions.


    • Enterprise wide use of HECS, AIMS or Integrated CAFM/ CMMS (Vision FM, St. Croix, TMA, Four Rivers, etc.)


    • Manufacturer or dealer device specific certified training on RF test equipment.


    • Comfortable in English public speaking situations, leading/ facilitating meetings and able to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences.
