Sidra works closely with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Hamad Medical Corporation across  all three activities to raise the standard of health and health care throughout the State of Qatar.

Department:

The Department of Pathology provides diagnostic laboratory and point of care services for Sidra Medical and Research Centre, for affiliated hospitals in Doha, and for referred-in specimens from outside of Qatar. In addition to its clinical service duties, the Department participates in basic and clinical research related to human disease, and provides teaching to medical undergraduates, residents and fellows in partnership with WCMC-Q and HMC. The Division of Microbiology and Virology within the Department of Pathology specializes in providing diagnostic medical microbiology/virology services under the umbrella of Pathology.

Person:

The Clinical or Medical Microbiologist (also known as Clinical Pathologist) reports directly to the Division Chief  – Microbiology and Virology, and indirectly to the Service Chief (Chair) - Pathology. The Medical Microbiologist represents his or her Division within the Department of Pathology, within Sidra and externally to provide, advance, and promote excellence in the investigation, and diagnosis of pediatric and/or maternal disease in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology and molecular detection of pathogens; and plans and directs the educational activities, research and diagnostic test development in the Division.

The Clinical Microbiologist is responsible for provision of laboratory service; diagnostic testing, test interpretation, communication with medical staff, method/instrument validation, quality control and assurance; participation in the management of the Division; teaching at various levels; basic and applied research; The Clinical Microbiologist is also responsible for all aspects of laboratory functions including diagnostic testing, maintaining quality assurance programs, and training of laboratory staff, residents and fellows within the Division.

Key Role Accountabilities:

General

  • Assists and supports the Division Chief and the Department Chair in the development and implementation of the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division of Microbiology and Virology as well the Department of Pathology

Clinical and Technical

  • Scientific oversight of specific areas of the Clinical Microbiology & Virology laboratory including general bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, molecular testing and rapid diagnostics, which may include point-of-care testing.
  • Scientific oversight of quality assurance and management of specific areas of the clinical laboratory in association with the laboratory supervisors and bench technologists
  • Consultation and advice regarding the appropriate initial investigation of pediatric and maternal patients suspected of infectious disease
  • Responsible for the timely reporting of critical results to the Sidra Infection Prevention and Control Service, which in turn reports these results to the Supreme Council of Health
  • Interpretation of laboratory information derived from microbiology testing for the diagnosis and management of pediatric and maternal patients
  • Identification of specialized microbiological testing appropriate for intensive care of patients in acute care clinical areas as well as patients with endocrine, cardiac, immunological, gastrointestinal, and renal disorders.
  • Consultation and advice regarding the appropriate utilization of microbiological tests by Sidra clinicians and monitoring of areas of over- and under-utilization
  • Assisting clinicians in development of test algorithms for diagnosis of infections in patients with complex disorders
  • Assist in the administration of the Sidra infectious disease point of care testing policy within the hospital and its appropriate utilization in specialized areas.
  • Assist in the medical oversight and clinical direction of the antibiotic stewardship program
  • Provide clinical consultation for antibiotic stewardship
  • Assist in providing epidemiological data of antibiotic susceptibility patterns

Educational

  • Education of postgraduate trainees in the Department of Pathology and graduate/postgraduate programs at Sidra, including pathology residency programs
  • Informal and formal education in the clinical laboratory setting, seminars, and rounds
  • Updating physicians of new developments and trends in Clinical Microbiology and monitoring of viral diseases in pediatric patients with immunological disorders
  • Initiation and implementation of continuing education programs for laboratory technologists within the Microbiology and Virology Division (e.g. microbiology/infectious disease rounds, invited seminars, symposia, teleconferences)
  • Training of research students and fellows in both the basic and R&D laboratories

Research & Diagnostic Test Development

  • Basic and applied clinically relevant research in the area of Clinical Microbiology/Virology in collaboration with internal and external scientists and clinicians
  • Seeking external funding to support basic and applied research activities
  • Continuing diagnostic test development to improve existing methods, replace outdated technology, evaluate new technology, and implement testing for emerging pathogens
  • In collaboration with Sidra clinicians, perform clinical research projects that address specific and important questions in the diagnosis and management of pediatric and maternal patients

 Administrative

  • Participation in committees relevant to Pathology and Clinical Microbiology within Sidra as directed by the Division Chief and/or Department Chair.
  • Assist in establishment of standards for delivery of diagnostic and consultative services in medical microbiology and infectious disease
  • Assist in the management of the Division technologists
  • Assist in coordination of fellows/residents education within the Division
  • Determination of the range and scope of microbiology/virology tests in consultation with Sidra clinicians
  • Assist in establishment and monitoring of quality improvement and utilization review
  • Assist in monitoring the accuracy, precision, and clinical relevance of laboratory test results through the implementation of both internal and external quality control programs
  • Continuous review of the testing menu to identify obsolete tests and areas where introduction of new testing is warranted
  • Continuous review of instrumentation with a view to update and upgrade the testing technology utilized in the Division to achieve improved workflow as well as cost effectiveness
  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of interest policies.

In view of the developing and changing needs and opportunities within Sidra during this start-up phase, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.

Qualifications:

 

ESSENTIAL

PREFERRED

Education

MD or PhD

Specialist Certification in Clinical/Medical Microbiology

International Publications/Presentations in field of Clinical/Medical Microbiology and/or subspecialities

Experience in obtaining research grants and supervising research students

Experience

3+ years Clinical or Medical Microbiology experience

3+ experience in a Pediatric and/or Maternal Hospital

Certification and Licensure

Active license to practice Clinical/Medical Microbiology and Virology in home country or country of training (or equivalent certification).

American Board of Medical Microbiology or American Society for Clinical Pathology Residency or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Medical Microbiology or the UK Royal College of Pathologists in Medical Microbiology or equivalent.

Lean/Six Sigma Training & Certification.
