JOB SUMMARY: The Lactation Consultant is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who has the direct operational responsibility for offering consultations to breastfeeding mothers in the hospital setting. The Lactation Service and Lactation Consultant activity provides inpatient support to breastfeeding mothers, regardless of inpatient location, as well as an Outpatient/Outreach program that provides clients with direct access to education, consultation, follow-up, and community resources in the preconception, prenatal, and postnatal periods.    
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provides lactation support and services to breastfeeding mothers/infants upon physician, nurse, or patient referral/request

  • Addresses maternal and family feeding preferences while respecting the individual family’s breastfeeding goals

  • Teaches, coaches, supports breastfeeding mothers utilizing evidence-based practice, using Sidra approved educational resources

  • Teaches, coaches, supports, and mentors Sidra nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to promote evidence-based clinical practice related to human lactation, and to support breastfeeding for mother-infant dyads

  • Assesses community need for breastfeeding education, and participates/teaches in programs to address needs

  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in research, and quality improvement opportunities that will advance the knowledge base and practice of lactation services

  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence based standards of practice, guidelines, policies, procedures, care plans, educational materials and protocols within area of lactation

  • Serve as a consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare community, and to the larger community in areas of lactation

  • Participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of programs and projects in lactation and breastfeeding to meet goals and objectives of Sidra, the community and the Qatar National Health Strategy

  • Is a role model of  professionalism through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking,  problem-solving skills and self-development

  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations

  • Consultant ensures that recruiting, commissioning, on-boarding, orientation and service activation responsibilities are carried out in accordance with project plans and timelines and which may extend into hospital operations 

  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

  • In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary                                                                                                                                                                   

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 3 Year Diploma in Nursing

            AND/OR

  • Registered Midwife (3 year graduate programme or equivalent)

Experience

  • 4+ years of experience, inclusive of 2 years progressive consultancy experience within relevant specialty from an accredited healthcare institution

Certification and Licensure

  • IBCLC Certification by International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBLCE)
  • Current RN Licensure
  • Current BLS and NRP
