The hospital will include 10 operating theatres, 400 beds, 100 percent single rooms with a private bathroom, a birthing center and an emergency department.

DEPARTMENT/BRANCH PROFILE:

The Department of Surgery at Sidra Medicine offers a comprehensive range of routine and advanced Surgical Services for women and children, equipped with state of the art technology in a completely digital hospital environment. The Department of Surgery is made up of the following pediatric services, delivered in accordance with best practice standards whilst being driven by clinical evidence methodologies, in a patient-centered, highly collaborative environment: General and Thoracic Surgery, Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery (PCFS), Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology Surgery, Ophthalmologic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Dental Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Urology.  In addition, surgical treatment for acute gynecological surgical conditions will be provided.  Within each of these sub-specialties, care for the spectrum of diseases seen in the pediatric population will be provided.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery  performs clinical care, education and research for the Division of Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery and the Department of Surgery.  This Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery will be expected to perform at a high level, providing excellent care for patients and families, and demonstrating leadership for the other members of the Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery team.

The Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery  is responsible for Care of patients in the outpatient setting, ongoing care on inpatient units, inpatient consultations, emergency call coverage, surgical care and surgical teaching, teaching of residents, fellows and other members of the staff, participation in PCFS meetings and patient rounds, departmental meetings, and participation in individual or team research projects and quality improvement projects.  The Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary clinics and other collaborative scenarios working with Nursing, Allied Health (Speech Language Pathologists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, etc.), Otolaryngologists, Neurosurgeons, Geneticists, Ophthalmology providers, Dentists and Orthodontists, Neonatologists, Dermatologists, Pediatricians and Developmental Pediatrics providers, Diagnostic Imaging providers, and others.

The Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery will be involved in the care of a wide variety of clinical conditions including: cleft lip, cleft palate, congenital ear anomalies, cranial deformities, craniofacial syndromes, facial trauma, congenital and acquired hand deformities, vascular and pigmented lesions, benign skin tumors, malignant tumors of the skin and soft tissue, breast deformity,  soft tissue and extremity trauma, myelomeningocele, pilonidal disease, body contour deformity, etc. The Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery is responsible for ensuring a high standard of service to all patients, their families, and other hospital staff as prescribed in the patient care and facility standards set down by Sidra Medicine.

The Physician - Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery works as a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar and collaborates with the Medical School, to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the surgical curriculum (both general and pediatric specific) by the members of the division for the undergraduate medical students and surgical residents as required for an ACGME curriculum

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provides excellent patient clinical and surgical care
  • Covers emergency and call duties as determined by the Division Chief
  • May participate in clinical care at offsite locations such as Hamad General Hospital as required
  • Works collaboratively with Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar to provide teaching support/instruction regarding the surgical curriculum (both general and pediatric specific) for the undergraduate medical students and surgical residents as required for an ACGME-I curriculum
  • Works in a congenial, supportive, collaborative, equitable, and progressive manner.
  • Works collaboratively with other physicians and all other division staff to ensure that cohesive, cross functional teams are developed and maintained.
  • Promotes mentorship and academic career development for junior team members.
  • Participates in clinical and/or basic science research projects
  • Actively participates in graduate medical education and in education for nursing, technical staff, and other physicians as necessary
  • Communicates effectively, consistently, and in a timely manner with colleagues and other staff members
  • Keeps excellent and complete electronic medical records.
  • Participates actively in departmental meetings, retreats, journal clubs, and other agendas
  • Performs departmental duties as requested by the Division Chief

Scope of clinical responsibilities

  • Provides Plastic and Craniofacial care for all patients.  This includes clinic and outpatient consultations, operative procedures for routine, urgent and emergent care.
  • Develops, runs, and/or maintains multi-disciplinary teams required for optimal care of the PCFS patient population.
  • Provides clinical services as required to maintain, as much as possible, continuous coverage for the population. This may include rotations at partner institutions such as Hamad Medical Corporation. This will require participation in an on call roster.  All scheduling for on call will be done by the Division, under the overall direction of the Division Chief of Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery.
  • Participates in medical research/academic projects for the Division of PCFS. This includes the participation in joint programs, collaborations and primary projects of the Division, under the overall direction of the Division Chief. 
  • Practices with an appreciation for the concept of lifelong learning, striving to find ways to improve the delivery of care and the efficient use of available resources
  • Seeks ways to bring beneficial innovation into his/her work
  • Is accessible and available to referring physicians and allied health care providers.
  • Works cooperatively with other members of the department and institution to ensure that a high standard of patient care services is maintained.
  • Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers in accordance with policies and regulations of the facility.
  • Undertakes appraisals of staff as directed.
  • Participates in mandatory training and actively practices continual professional development in alignment with Sidra’s professional development programs to ensure maintenance of professional licensure/accreditation
  • Develops and/or delivers training programs to new employees on equipment and procedures in the area of operations in alignment with the department’s and Sidra’s training objectives and plans
  • Acts as an educational resource for the division and contributes to the education of patients, staff and physicians and other stakeholders as required and as requested by the Division Chief
  • Provides support and relief for other surgeons as required
  • Participates in community outreach programs and  initiatives undertaken by Sidra
  • Observes departmental and applicable organizational policies, procedures, regulations and information to the Department of Surgery care team
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, and maintains patient confidentiality at all times

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree (E.g. MD, MBBS, MBBCH) 
  • Completion of residency program with specialty experience or training from an accredited Western Board
  • Sub specially Fellowship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery and/or Craniofacial Surgery (or equivalent training or certification).

Experience:

  • 2+ years of post-certification/residency in clinical care or education in the relevant field from a North American Academic/ Health care  Institution  or equivalent in UK, Republic of Ireland, or other European Countries with accredited and recognized board, Australia or New Zealand.

Certification:

  • Valid professional License in the country of origin or country of practice in the specialty area
  • Appropriate Specialty Western Board certification in Plastic Surgery
  • Eligible for licensure as a Plastic Surgery in the State of Qatar
