Department/Branch Profile:

The Department of Anesthesiology provides clinical care for pediatric, obstetric, and some other adult patients with a broad spectrum of medical needs. The anesthesia care team is involved in patient care in the operating rooms, obstetrical and critical care units, in interventional treatments for pain management, and in other diagnostic and procedural rooms throughout the hospital. All patients receive the most advanced treatment from a caring, vigilant, attentive team of medical professionals.

The Anesthesia care team is committed to providing anesthesia care in the form of general, regional, sedative, analgesic & resuscitative to facilitate surgery, invasive/non-invasive procedures / examinations, acute / chronic pain management, management of problems in cardiac / respiratory resuscitation and critical care.

Pediatric Anesthesia Services will serve all children age 0-18 years who present for outpatient, inpatient and emergency surgeries and procedures, and pediatric trauma surgeries between ages 0 -14. It will be committed to advancing the delivery of pediatric anesthetic care, and the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Pediatric Anesthesia Service will provide anesthesia care for all children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease.
Adult Anesthesia Services will serve obstetric and urgent/emergent adult gynecological patients requiring surgical procedures for low complexity emergent gynecological conditions, labor and operative obstetrics, including cerclage, cesarean section, cesarean hysterectomy and any surgery necessary during the course of delivery.

Job Summary:

Physician - Pediatric Anesthesiology is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care for pediatric patients requiring anesthesia or perioperative care; This will include effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing, treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care within the usual scope of anesthetic services. The Physician - Pediatric Anesthesiology is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff. He/she is also expected to demonstrate an active interest and involvement in research. Interdisciplinary and multi-level educational contributions are integral to this post, and may include bedside teaching, formal didactics, participation in simulation training, and written communications that are educational in nature.  The Physician - Pediatric Anesthesiology will endeavor to obtain a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar and will collaborate with the Medical School, to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the basic science and clinical curriculum by the members of the division for the undergraduate medical students and  residents as required for an ACGME curriculum. 


Key Role Accountabilities:
  • Identifies and helps to implements the vision, strategic direction, and growth of Pediatric  Anesthesia service and collaborates on the implementation of strategies to achieve them.
  • Engages in clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for the activities of pediatric anesthesia delivery.
  • Assumes responsibility for administrative related activities of Pediatric Anesthesia unless otherwise provided for by the hospital, and serves on all requested committees and appointing such committees as necessary to conduct the function of the department.
  • Helps to develop and implement policies and procedures that guide support provision of services to the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia.
  • Ensures that the staff of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia provides services that are in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the Joint Commission International, Qatar Supreme Health Council, and all other applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia.
  • Implements the clinical service strategies and business plan for the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia.
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participates in the evaluation of products for use by different members of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia to ensure their safety and efficacy.
  • Sets and achieves targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided and initiates actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives and the HMC Cardiovascular Institute.
  • Sets and achieves targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws of the State of Qatar.
  • Ensures effective communication with and involvement of all staff within the division in regards to key decisions and initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with other service chiefs, division chiefs, and executive directors to achieve broad Sidra and HMC Cardiovascular Institute objectives.
  • Initiates, implements and oversees programs designed to foster positive relations between physicians and the hospital operations and administration.
  • Identifies and coordinates resolution of problems to improve physician utilization and patient satisfaction.
  • In view of the developing and changing needs and opportunities within Sidra during this phase, this physician may perform other duties as assigned.
  • Facilitates sharing of mother and child medical statistics in Qatar
  • Attends departmental and division committees when appropriate
  • Follows all Sidra-related and HMC policies and procedures
  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra during this pre-operational phase, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:


  • MD, MBBS or equivalent
  • Completion of residency program with specialty experience or training in Pediatric and Pediatric Anesthesia from an accredited Western Board


  • 1+ years of post-certification/residency in pediatric anesthesia in the relevant field from a North American Academic/ Health care Institution or equivalent in UK, Republic of Ireland, or other European Countries with accredited and recognized board, Australia or New Zealand.
  • Research, Education or Administration experience


  • Valid professional License in the country of origin or country of practice in the specialty area
  • Board Certification or its equivalent in Anesthesiology from an accredited Western Board.
