DEPARTMENT/BRANCH PROFILE:

The Department of Surgery at Sidra Medical and Research Center offers a comprehensive range of routine and advanced Surgical Services for women and children, equipped with state of the art technology in a completely digital hospital environment. The Department of Surgery is made up of the following  services, delivered in accordance with best practice standards whilst being driven by clinical evidence methodologies, in a patient-centered, highly collaborative environment: in the pediatric population: General and Thoracic Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngologic Surgery, Ophthalmologic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Dental Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Urology.  In addition, surgical treatment for acute gynecological surgical conditions will be provided.  Within each of these subspecialties, care for the spectrum of diseases seen in the pediatric population will be provided.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Dental Hygienist is responsible for promoting dental health by completing dental prophylaxis, providing oral cancer screening and radiographic studies, charting conditions of decay and disease, performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act. The incumbent works independently as a dental hygienist and performs direct patient care under the general supervision of the Divisional Chief of Dentistry and dentists.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Makes decisions within scope of practice regarding the treatment of patients in relation to dental hygiene.

  • Delivers competent patient care to patients from newborn to 18 years of age, through the use of dental technology, dental health Maintenance, infection control, health promotion and maintenance, chairside manner, creating a safe, effective environment, listening, teamwork, administering medication, thoroughness, and self-development.

  • Provides for the gingival and oral health of the patient by removing plaque and calculus from teeth.

  • Demonstrates and practices family-centered care:

    • Maintains a therapeutic relationship with patient and family.

    • Communicates relevant information at the patients' and family's level of understanding.

    • Identifies patient/ family need for services from ancillary departments and provides follow-up and referral as necessary.

  • Prepares patients for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, reassuring, seating and draping patient

  • Educates patients/ family or care giver by giving oral hygiene, plaque control and postoperative instructions and providing reminders of time of next dental hygiene visit

  • Supports and participates in the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services.

  • Demonstrates competent patient care, integrating infection control and body substance precautions, and patient safety.

  • Documents treatment and review of medical history, etc. in patients' record.

  • Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.

  • Selects materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient's oral health.

  • Completes dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath the gum margins.

  • Detects disease by completing oral cancer screening, feeling and visually examining gums, and using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession and exposing and developing radiographic studies.

  • Arrests dental decay by applying fluorides and other cavity preventing agents.

  • Helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drugs and oxygen supply, and directory of emergency contacts.

  • Documents dental hygiene services by recording vital signs, medical and dental histories and charting in patient records.

  • Maintains patient confidence and information confidentiality.

  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.

  • Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories and evaluating new equipment and techniques.

  • Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies and verifying receipt of supplies.

  • Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
  • Education in dental hygiene
  • Experience in a similar role
  • License to practice as a dental hygienist with a full, current, and unrestricted license in country of origin
